Reviled by critics and even called a blemish on the respective resumes of its cast (Tim Robbins! Jennifer Jason Leigh! Paul Newman!) when it was first released, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY has turned out to be, among other things, the best Christmas movie of the 90s. It cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million to make and took in only $2.9 million, according to IMDB. But despite all that, the Coen Brothers' love letter to the heyday of screwball comedy better captures the spirit of Christmas – and is a more beautifully made, more sparkling film – than any other holiday effort in recent cinematic history.
