Giving up her dream and life long ago, Yoko (42) shuts herself off from the rest of the world and works from home as an online customer service clerk, never leaving her tiny apartment. When she receives the news of her estranged father’s death, she is forced by her cousin to leave the room and ride with his family to return home for the first time in 20 years. However, Yoko ends up left alone in one of the rest stops on the highway... Now, without a cell phone nor enough money for the public transportation, Yoko has no choice but to hitch some rides in order to make it to her father’s funeral.

Screening as part of the ACA Cinema Project's latest series Family Portrait: Japanese Family in Flux, an examination of the shifting dynamics and struggles of the Japanese household in contemporary cinema. Showcasing 10 features, including premieres and revivals, Family Portrait confronts the complexities of familial bonds in the face of adversity—from intergenerational gaps to changing mores and traditions—bringing to question what truly defines a family and its values in a modern world. Additional screenings take place at the Japan Society.
