During the 19 months before the Taliban retook Afghanistan, Afghan filmmaker and journalist Ayazi and Oscar-nominated director Mettelsiefen gained unique access to Zarifa Ghafari, one of the country’s youngest female mayors. Their portrait follows the 26-year-old as she navigates political and personal turmoil, from a tense relationship with her father (a leader in the Afghan military) to a dilemma about working with her bodyguard—all against the constant threat of assassination.
